The Museum’s 10th annual Honey Harvest will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Honey Harvest, the only event of its kind in Chattanooga, is a museum wide celebration for some of the world’s hardest workers: the Honey Bee. Museum guests will be awed by the art of beekeeping, the life and work of a honey bee, and how honey is made. Plus, guests will see first-hand how the bees play an important role in maintaining the Museum’s new Green Roof and contribute to improving our community’s environment.
A hive of local honey bees has long been a part of the Museum’s exhibits. Since May the bees have enjoyed a new habitat of plants on the Museum’s new Green Roof. These bees now have the benefit of an ecosystem similar to that in natural areas and have an important job ensuring the maintenance of their rooftop habitat and in turn, the energy efficiency the roof provides the Museum. Both beekeeping and the green roof are examples of how Creative Discovery Museum is making green choices to better the guests’ experience and the environment through good energy management and conservation.
During the Honey Harvest celebration, visitors can observe beekeepers working in the Museum’s own on-site hive, see how honey is extracted from the comb, meet a beekeeper with the Tennessee Valley Beekeeper Association, talk with Jason Groppel, a bee expert from Nashville and taste different honeys from around the world. In the Atrium, guests will learn about the many uses of honey, make beeswax candles, create beeswax lip balm, and make honey soap. Creation Station will also host a bee-themed craft activity. All activities are free with paid Museum admission.
