Mozart’s Don Giovanni opera is based on the legend of Don Juan, a nice follow-up to the CSO’s Opening Night concert. The opera combines comedy, melodrama, and supernatural elements. Legend tells us that the Overture, written just hours before the premiere, was sight-read by musicians, and received immediate accolades by the audience. Soprano Maria Valdes then joins us for Mozart’s sacred work, Exsultate jubilate, originally written for a castrato. Ending the program is Mahler’s 4th symphony, considered his most accessible with a smaller orchestra and shorter performance time compared to other Mahler symphonies. It opens with flutes and sleigh bells, and concludes with text sung by a soprano, featuring Valdes once again.
