Elgar’s Cello Concerto was his last notable work, composed in the aftermath of the first World War. A critic at the time called it “very simple…but with a profound wisdom and beauty underlying its simplicity.” American cellist Joshua Roman will perform the contemplative work. Tchaikovsky had a love/hate relationship with his 5th symphony. At times proud then repelled by it, he defines the work as “Complete resignation before Fate, or (which is the same thing) before the inscrutable predestination of Providence.”
