This all-Russian program begins with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, celebrating the change of mood from the somber mystery of Good Friday to the uninhibited rejoicing of Easter Day. Pianist Alexander Schimpf joins us for Tchaikovsky’s deeply expressive and romantic first piano concerto. Shostakovitch’s Symphony No. 1 ends the program. Written when the composer was only 18, it set the tone for all his symphonies that followed.
