Born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts, he received an AB in economics from Guilford College and a Masters of Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His professional career began as a public school guidance counselor and social studies teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina. From there, he became Dean of Student Affairs at North Carolina School for the Arts. He then moved to Guilford College where he was sequentially Director of Admissions, Director of the Honors Program, Assistant to the President, Acting Academic Dean, Acting President and Provost of the College. In 1984 he relocated to Pennsylvania to become Head of Abington Friends School where he served for fourteen years before moving to Sidwell Friends. Bruce B. Stewart served as Head of School at Sidwell Friends School, Washington, DC from 1998 through 2009. He is now retired and living in Chattanooga, TN. Bruce is married to Andra Jurist and has three daughters and three grandsons. Bruce serves on the Boards of School Year Abroad, National Association of Independent Schools and the Leon Sullivan Foundation.
