Creative Discovery Museum welcomes guests to indulge in the sweet goodness of holiday traditions with an operatic performance of one of the most beloved children’s folktales, Hansel and Gretel, and then watch as an expert in confection decorates an enchanting gingerbread house to be given away to one lucky Museum guest.

The Atlanta-based Capitol City Opera Company will perform the timeless classic, Hansel and Gretel, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each of these two productions includes a pre-show discussion of what opera is and themes of positive personal and social behavior. Capitol City Opera Company is an established resident repertory opera troupe with over 20 years experience. They perform fully staged and costumed operas specifically for kids. The opera will give five children an opportunity to participate in non-speaking, costumed roles.

Also at 3 p.m., guests may enjoy watching Sibyl Carmichael of Chattanooga’s The Sugar Shoppe demonstrate the art of decorating a perfect gingerbread house sure to produce visions of dancing lollipops and sugary delights. Sibyl Carmichael will give away the gingerbread dream house to one lucky Museum visitor, but guests must be present to register for the house and present when the winner is announced.

“Opera is a great experience and one most children are unfamiliar with,” said Creative Discovery Museum's Arts Manager Liza Blair. “Both the opera and the gingerbread house decorating are a great way to showcase two unique art forms while celebrating the holiday season. Gingerbread houses give bakers the canvas to express their creative talents. Having an opportunity to showcase this under-represented art form is a tremendous thrill, and one I think kids will love too.”

The lore of the gingerbread house dates back to Victorian era when gingerbread houses were crafted and inspired by the beloved children’s story of Hansel and Gretel. Since then, professional cake bakers and vernacular cooks have honed their skills decorating houses spanning from simple creations to elaborate structures. If you would like to have your family experience the fun and excitement of creating your own gingerbread house, Creative Discovery Museum is offering workshops throughout the holiday season. Please visit our website for specific dates and times.

The December 5th events are free with paid admission to the Museum. Tickets are $9.95 for children and adults. Creative Discovery Museum is located at 321 Chestnut Street in downtown Chattanooga. For more information, contact Liza Blair, Arts Manager, at 423.648.6069 or visit www.cdmfun.org.
