Nightmares return to Lookout Mountain for the sixth year as Ruby Falls hosts its annual Haunted Cavern. This intense event takes place both above and below ground and is considered one of the area’s best haunted attractions.
A visionary, Dr. Kilgore built Wyrmwood Asylum on the side of Lookout Mountain above the caves and tunnels which the patients named “The Vault.” Those who went to the Vault never returned. With only one entrance to the original Vault, escape from Wyrmwood Asylum was virtually impossible. Dr. Kilgore made claims that he developed an aggressive and experimental program, transferring the worst criminals across the country to his new facility, Wyrmwood Asylum in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In 1975, Ruby Falls hired Cowin Engineering Company of Birmingham to blast an alternate exit into the Ruby Falls Tourist Attraction. This exit also unsealed the Wyrmwood Asylum Vault, along with the disturbed, restless souls who were trapped inside. In 2009, the images of torture and vile experiments will rise out of the darkness of the Vault. The lost souls are bringing the ghostly images back to life, rising from the depths of a dark, sinister history glooming atop Lookout Mountain.
