GPS FALL ORCHESTRA CONCERT

In partnership with McCallie School, GPS presents its Fall Orchestra Concert. This year’s concert will feature a variety of music from the Baroque era—Latin music from the great guitarist Carlos Santana—that is performed with a medley of music from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.

One of the highlighted pieces of the evening, “Bach Double Concerto,” features solos by GPS senior violinist Olivia Combs and McCallie oboist Jacks Pollard. “These students are incredible musicians performing one of the great concertos of all times, which is often performed by professional orchestras,” says Mary Baxter, GPS orchestra director.

Other exciting components of this year’s fall concert include performances by the GPS Wind Ensemble and beginning winds and percussion classes, which are both twice their typical size. “The students are strong players. They’ve been working diligently and making great progress since the start of school,” Baxter says.

The Middle School Advanced Orchestra will play music from Beethoven, Dvořák, and Tchaikovsky, as well as a famous tune from The Beatles. The sixth/seventh-grade strings class will also rock the night with pieces including “First Finger Rock” and “Samba La Bamba.”
