Matthew Shipp is unquestionably one of the most acclaimed and provocative pianists in contemporary jazz. When we initiated Jazz At Barking Legs a few years ago, we considered ourselves very fortunate to kick it off with a powerhouse solo piano concert by Mr. Shipp. As a musician who studied with John Coltrane’s mentor, Dennis Sandole, Matt is fully schooled and skilled in the jazz tradition. The directions in which he takes that tradition are totally his own. Teamed with the phenomenal bass of Michael Bisio, Matthew Shipp is sure to deliver an unforgettable performance.
