Matthew Shipp is one of the most acclaimed jazz pianists of the past two decades, truly being one of the leading lights of a new generation of jazz giants. He has reached the holy grail of jazz in that he possesses a unique style that is all his own—and he’s one of the few in jazz that can say so today.
The Matthew Shipp Trio, featuring bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Whit Dickey, has been widely praised for its adventurous, dynamic performances, and the 2011 double-album Art of the Improviser on Thirsty Ear Records, which features a live set by the trio alongside a solo set, received universal acclaim and graced numerous year-end Top Ten lists with several #1 spot placements. Downbeat magazine called it “…a monumental work that befits a musician that deserves a place of choice in the jazz piano pantheon.”
Following a solo performance at Barking Legs Theater in 2011, Shipp brings his trio to town for its first Chattanooga performance and will play the theater’s beautiful 1916 Steinway grand piano. This is a rare opportunity to see some of the finest, most imaginative and astounding jazz performers in the world in an intimate setting.
