The Chattanooga Salvation Army School of Music & Art was founded in 2001 to serve as a center for providing discipline, building self-esteem, increasing confidence, encouraging leadership and enhancing the readiness to learn of low income, high-risk students. The school teaches selected music and art skills and provides activities, resources, and incentives that motivate and guide each young person to achieve success now and in the future.
Instruction takes place each Tuesday evening over two semesters corresponding to the school year. Students take a major class depending on school grade and select two of four elective classes. The major class for Grades 3-5 is General Music Introduction and Recorder. The Grade 6-12 major class is Brass Band. The four elective classes are Guitar, Percussion, Piano, and Art. Art classes cover a wide range and variety of media, and the instruction includes art history.
Ultimately, students strive to be invited to perform in their respective ensembles for a showcase concert each semester. An art exhibit is presented on the same evening as the concert at the Citadel Community Center.
