The legacy of Fela Kuti is a rich one. Fela is easily regarded as one of Africa's most prolific music pioneers. He was revered around the world as a talented multi-instrumentalist, Nigerian freedom fighter, and human rights activist. Amid the turmoil in Lagos during the 60's Fela created "Afrobeat"; a fusion of American psychedelic rock, Jazz and Funk with traditional West African music. With a musical career that spanned countless albums and global tours, Fela's music was a rallying cry for the disenfranchised throughout the world. After a life dedicated to freedom through music, Fela was laid to rest August 2, 1997. More than 1 million people attended his funeral.
On October 6th 2011 join us as we pay homage to the music of Afrobeat Pioneer Fela Kuti and what he has inspired around the world. We will be selecting some of the freshest modern Afrobeat, Highlife, African Funk, global Hip-Hop, and Afro Latin tunes.
