Music, dancing, food and hands-on activities will be the featured fun to culminate the closing of Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente exhibition at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center on Friday, January 28 from 4 pm – 8 pm. Clemente, a Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star Outfielder, was the country’s first Latino American Hall of Famer.

“This family day is a fun-filled opportunity to culminate the closing of an amazing Smithsonian traveling exhibition at the same time celebrate the Latin American culture,” said Rose Martin, Executive Director of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.

The day will include Latin American infused food, art projects, a fashion show and live music performed by local musicians Carlos Colon and Tropical Swing.

On Friday, La Paz clients will showcase the native dress of various Latin American countries in a cultural fashion show held as a part of the “Family Day” event featuring the exhibit, “Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente,” at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.

La Paz clients will adorn themselves in the colors, patterns and cultural dress of countries ranging from the traje of Puerto Rico to the pollera of Colombia and Panama. Each participant will be accompanied by music specific to each country.

“Our clients are proud of the culture of their native countries,” said Melody Bonilla, Client Services Coordinator for La Paz, “and this will give them a great opportunity to share that vibrancy, as well as the differences in each country, with others.”

“Beyond Baseball”, the Smithsonian Institute’s traveling exhibit, features Puerto Rican baseball star, Roberto Clemente, and his success both on and off the baseball field as humanitarian and advocate for the peoples of Latin America. The exhibit will run through January 30.

Friday’s fashion show will be held at 4:30 pm as a part of the “Family Day” event at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, which is from 4 to 8 pm.
