Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration honoring African culture and heritage, is celebrated annually throughout the world next week from December 26 through January 1.

The Bessie Smith Cultural Center and the Jewish Community Center will celebrate and demonstrate the third principle of Kwanzaa, Ujima, which means collective work and responsibility, on Tuesday, December 28 with the screening of “The Black Candle”. The Black Candle narrated by legendary poet Maya Angelou, uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African American experience. Filmed all over the world, “The Black Candle” is a timely illumination on why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are so important to African Americans today.

Bring your lunch along with your family and/or co-workers and make plans to attend the viewing from noon – 1 pm at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center located at 200 E. Martin Luther King Boulevard. This event is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information call (423) 266-8658 or visit www.bessiesmithcc.org.
