RJD2 (PHILADELPHIA)
RJD2 originally began his career in Columbus, Ohio, DJing in 1993 with a pair of turntables bought from a friend. He went to high school at Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center and graduated in 1994. He claims his name originates from another friend who referenced him as "Rjd2" in his raps, and the name stuck. Originally working the role of DJ in the Columbus rap group MHz, he later signed to Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label, releasing the self-proclaimed "mix CD" Your Face or Your Kneecaps. A year later he signed to El-P's record label Definitive Jux and released his solo debut album Deadringer to much acclaim. Rjd2 later collaborated with Columbus rapper Blueprint under the name Soul Position, releasing Unlimited EP in 2002 and 8 Million Stories in 2003. He released his second solo album Since We Last Spoke on Definitive Jux in 2004 and released Soul Position's second album Things Go Better with RJ and AL in 2006 under Rhymesayers Entertainment label. He still continues to produce tracks, working with many independent rappers, such as Copywrite, Cunninlynguists, Cage, MF DOOM, Diverse and Aceyalone. He contributed a cover of "Airbag" by Radiohead for the 2006 album "Exit Music". He has recently announced that he has left Def Jux and will be going for more of a 'pop route'. RJD2 has been extremely popular in the skateboarding and skateboard filming subculture, frequently used in montages. RJD2 has a new track called "Christmas Eve Montage" from the new Nightmare Before Christmas album "Nightmare Revisited".
On his blog, RJD2 recently stated he has an album slated for 2009.[3]. However, it has been pushed back to 2010, and will be released on his own label.
THE CONSTELLATIONS (ATLANTA)
Dubbed an Atlanta supergroup by locals, The Constellations officially formed when vocalist Elijah Jones teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley) to create Southern Gothic. Jones and Allen tossed ideas around for two years before finally recording. Now the band and its ever-changing line-up of Atlanta musicians is playing sold out shows in Atlantas most popular venues, from the Earl, Star Bar, Lennys, the Drunken Unicorn, and even Athens the 40 Watt.
Recorded at Maze Studios, Southern Gothic (?Make Records Not Bombs?, 2008) is a meandering tour of the underbelly of Atlanta, lead by Jones gruff delivery and parabolic lyrics. Lush production invokes the muscular rhythms of 70s Fela Kuti, the propelling pop sensibility of the Gorillaz and the vocals of a modern-day Tom Waits. Cee Lo of Gnarls Barkley and newly signed SRC artist Asher Roth are featured on the album, with a revision of Tom Waits Step Right Up as a centerpiece. Also on the album are Atlanta musicians Brand Hagen (Trances Arc) and Julian Dorio (The Whigs). The Constellations live show consists of a five-man band backing Jones trademark vocals and persona: James Arnold, Ryan Davis, Jamie Gordon, Wes Hoffman and Jason Nackers (Second Shift). A crowd-pleasing, all-girl Clap Squad covers back-up vocals and completes the spectacle. The band plays locally monthly and will begin touring nationally this summer.
Happy Chichester (COLUMBUS)
Happy Chichester - formerly of Howlin' Maggie (go here for the videos for "Alcohol" and "I'm A Slut") and The Royal Crescent Mob - has also contributed songs to the Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers and Shawn Smith's solo record while dropping drums on the Umar Bin Hassan release "Life Is Good"!
Since disbanding Howlin' Maggie, Happy has been dividing his time between traveling the country performing solo on piano and guitar and recording his follow up CD "Lovers Come Back" which was released on PopFly Music on February 14, 2007. "Lovers Come Back" has received radio play and gotten great reviews calling it "an eclectic masterpiece," "magnificent," and a "deliciously diverse affair." The years 2007 and 2008 have had Happy on the road touring the USA and Europe solo and as the opening act on the RJD2 tour.
Happy's first solo release on his label was on March 02, 2004 when PopFly Music officially released a CD of his live solo performance entitled "Happy Chichester/Live At The Aladdin Theater, Portland, OR 3/28/03", a record that was recorded for the cost of a pint of beer. In fact, a bootleg copy was released and made a "Best Of 2003" list... calling Happy's solo CD: "Wildly infectious and raggedly spiritual, this recording is a must for those searching for genuinely talented artists trapped in a commercial conundrum." (2walls.com)
Touring across the country as a solo performer, Happy has shared the stage with RJD2, Simple Kid (UK), John Doe (of X), Brad (Shawn Smith/Stone Gossard), Tim Easton and many others. He headlined at Artisan Works in Upper NY and was featured performer on the main stage at Via Colori. His songs have been used by VH-1, MTV, P-Diddy for Fashion Trance, Ted Demme, the Oxygen Network and the indie film Tied Up. In 2006 Happy did the music score for the short film Zoe's Day, shot in New York and currently being shown at various film festivals. Called a mixture of Bjork, Tom Waits and Prince; Happy's live shows are each an insane and unique experience not to be missed.
