The tenth annual “Beat Hunger” concert featuring the UTC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Monte Coulter, will be held on two nights for the first time ever, due to standing room only performances in past years. The performances will be Sunday, November 22nd at 7:30 p.m. and Monday, November 23rd also at 7:30 p.m. Both will be held in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center.

The annual "Beat Hunger" concert has become a UTC tradition, and it marks the beginning of the Christmas giving season. Admission to the concert is 2 non-perishable food items or a two dollar check donation to the community kitchen. Any and all proceeds go directly to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
Clint Schmitt

Some highlighted pieces from this year’s concert include, “Head Talk” by Mark Ford; it is a piece that is played entirely on drum heads- without the drums attached. “Dragoon” by Lynn Glassock, is a Chattanooga premier of a piece for a large percussion ensemble that is inspired by the sounds of horse-drawn artillery. Additionally, “Supercell”, another Chattanooga premier, is a concerto for Alto Saxophone and percussion ensemble. The alto saxophone for this piece will be played special guest, Clint Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt is a music professor here at UTC as well as an avid performer throughout the Southeast.
Dr. Monte Coulter

The UTC Percussion Ensemble has earned a reputation through the Southeast as a premier college percussion ensemble, performing works on standard percussion instruments, as well as more exotic pitched and non-pitched sources. Their director, Dr. Coulter, is the director of percussion studies at UTC, and Coordinator of the Graduate School of Music. He is currently Principal Percussionist/Assistant Timpanist of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, and he has performed as a principal player in three of the four largest professional orchestras in Tennessee.
