Mayfield Farm and Nursery will be hosting a tomato fight between The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and The University of Tennessee Knoxville Sunday, Sept. 27 in Athens, Tennessee.

Students, alumni and fans will bring five dollars or five canned items as entry to the fight and at 2 PM will square off for the inaugural event. The fight is slated as “The largest tomato fight in North America” and is expected to make a big mess for a good cause.

“Yes, we realize throwing tomatoes seems like a contradiction to a food bank fundraiser, but these won’t be quite so edible by the time we throw ‘em” said Michael Mayfield, owner of Mayfield Farm & Nursery. “Our hope is that students and fans alike will meet in the middle (Athens) and initiate something that will bring these rivals together and help out the community.”

This fall, Mayfield will host several additional opportunities for fun at the 1,050-acre farm, including a 7-acre Corn Maze, a Pumpkin Patch, Bluegrass Night, an Antique Tractor Show and Trick or Treat Night. The Corn Maze is open Sept. 14 - Nov. 7.

The Mayfield family has been in the business of farming since 1820 and is located at 257 Highway 307, Athens, Tennessee. In following their reputation for providing quality dairy products, Mayfield now provides great tasting fruits and vegetables as well.
