With less than two months remaining before the first day of school, officials at Hamilton County's first public charter school for girls, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, have spent the past several months hiring faculty and staff and managing the student application process. School officials are now turning their focus to getting the building ready for the first day of school.

On Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 between 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, school officials invite area residents and organizations to participate as volunteers in CGLA’s School Extreme Makeover Project.

“This is not your typical volunteer project,” said Darcy Welch, Event Coordinator of CGLA’s School Extreme Makeover Project. “We are planning a fun filled weekend. Volunteers will have an opportunity to listen to live music, dance, and participate in contests while completing beautification projects. I am not aware of any other volunteer project where you can paint, play, and make an impact at the same time.”

Projects include painting, landscaping the front entrance of the school, and erecting new signage. To celebrate the completion of the renovation projects, CGLA officials will host an official “Move That Bus” ceremony on Saturday, June 6 at 2:30 pm.

“Our goal is to recruit at least 100 volunteers daily for this two day project,” said Donna Williams, CGLA’s Facilities Committee Chair. “Volunteers have an opportunity to join a team or organize their own team. I guarantee that participants will have a great time meeting and working with others who are also committed to making a difference in the community in which we live and work.”

Volunteers will be provided with all supplies, t-shirts, food, and fun. To join the CGLA Extreme Makeover Team, call Darcy Welch at (423) 702-7230 or email darcy.welch@cglaonline.com by Friday, May 29
