On October 9, the UTC Orchestra, under the baton of guest artist Lauri Redmer Minner and featuring guest artists Jay Craven and Nikolasa Tejero, will present a concert at 7:30 pm in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall of the UTC Fine Arts Center. The concert is free of charge and open to the general public.
The program for the concert includes two very familiar pieces and a less familiar work featuring one of Chattanooga’s most familiar musicians. Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles” is a stirring famous march taken from his opera Mlada. Antonin Dvorák’s Symphony #8 is a cheery, glowing celebration of Bohemian folk music. The highlight of the performance will be Franz Krommer’s “Airy Concerto for Two Clarinets and Orchestra”. Krommer was a Moravian composer in the early Classical period. The Concerto is a prime example of a composer who thoroughly understands an idiom composing a significant work which is not necessarily just an exercise in virtuosity.
The concert will be conducted by Southern Adventist University Orchestra and Chorale director, Laurie Redmer Minner. Ms. Minner is a renowned conductor and performer in her own right. The Krommer Concerto will feature two guest performers, Jay Craven and Nikolasa Tejero. Ms. Tejero is on the faculty at UTC as a lecturer and Clarinet studio instructor. Jay Craven needs no introduction to Chattanooga audiences as a former member of the CSO, a local educator and jazz musician, and a dedicated volunteer at Memorial Hospital where he uses his unique musicianship as a tool of healing.
