We are excited to bring Chris Groves back for his annual workshop at Townsend Atelier in 2020. His workshops are always excellent, informative, and fill up quickly, so register as soon as you are able.

This three-day workshop will cover how to paint various types of architecture and structures (bridges, buildings, streetscapes etc), in order to construct a compositionally beautiful and sound painting. Gestural elements, the flow of design, and color harmony will be heavily discussed. Students will use brushes very little (if at all) and will learn how to paint with unconventional tools and techniques like Cold Wax medium, palette knives, spatulas, and straight edges. These new tools and techniques will allow students to explore new directions in their painting by adding texture, layering, abstraction, and mark-making in new ways. The workshop will start the first day by experimenting with the tools and mediums on many small-scale studies. The next 2 days will be painting a larger piece in order to achieve some freedom and loosening up in the painting process.

Photo reference material/subject matter will be provided but students can bring their own if they wish. There will be a one-hour lunch break each day. Lunch is on your own. For students traveling from out of town, feel free to contact us if you need help with accommodation recommendations. We will be happy to help!
