Leslie J. Dulin will exhibit a collection of new acrylic paintings, Abstract Paintings, during June at In-Town Gallery as the month’s featured artist. Dulin uses unconventional painting tools to create bold abstract expressionist paintings on canvas. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 3, 5-8 pm and is free to the public.

“My paintings have no recognizable subject matter,” said Dulin. “I start my paintings by choosing one or more colors and spreading, dripping or throwing the paint with unusual tools such as metal spatulas, squeegees, trowels or silicone spatulas. Sometimes I use found objects to create texture, and stencils to add patterns. I evaluate the painting between layers and continue to add paint until I have a balanced and pleasing composition. I spend a lot of time analyzing the structure of my paintings. They don’t just happen. Many of my paintings have multiple starts underneath the final layer. These previous layers contribute texture and sometimes peek out between the final shapes.”

“My intention is to engage the emotions of the viewer, who is free to interpret my paintings in any way they wish. Often they see much more than I do. My titles reflect the overall colors or the feelings I get from a finished painting, but are only meant to suggest meaning,” she added.

Leslie J. Dulin is a lifelong resident of Signal Mountain. She received a BFA in graphic design from the University of Georgia, and worked in that field before retiring early to become a full-time fine artist. She cites inspiration from the patterns in contemporary Pop Art and the freedom of Abstract Expressionism. Among her other ongoing work are also collages and assemblages, which influence her abstract paintings. She has been a member of In-Town Gallery since 2005. Dulin is also represented by Magical Muse Gallery, Cookeville, TN.
